Dubai is easiest to explore with a mix of Metro journeys and selective taxi rides. Use the Metro for longer journeys along its lines, then pay for a short taxi connection when it saves a long walk or another transfer. Buses fill the gaps; the tram is useful around Dubai Marina; a Creek abra can be both the cheapest crossing and a highlight of the day.

This guide explains what each option costs, how payment works and where public transport makes practical sense, including trips to other emirates. Prices are in UAE dirhams, AED. Times are local Dubai time. Information checked on 3 October 2026.

Choose the transport that fits your day

  • Metro: the best starting point for an inexpensive solo trip between districts on the Red and Green lines. It avoids road congestion, but the walk beyond the station still counts.
  • Taxi: useful for families, luggage, beach hotels and destinations away from stations. Compare the whole group's public-transport fares with one taxi fare.
  • Bus: good value when a direct route reaches somewhere the Metro does not. A cheap journey with two changes may be poor value for a short holiday.
  • Tram: useful for local journeys around the Marina, JBR and Al Sufouh, rather than crossing the whole city.
  • Marine transport: excellent for a specific waterfront journey; departures and fares depend on the route.

Use RTA's S’hail journey planner to compare the complete trip, including walking and transfers.

nol cards and Dubai transport fares

A nol Silver card is a sensible default for several days of ordinary public transport. It costs AED 25, including AED 19 travel credit. A Gold card has the same purchase price and included credit, but charges premium fares on the Metro and tram. RTA card comparison

The usual Silver fares are AED 3 within one zone, AED 5 across two adjacent zones and AED 7.50 across more than two zones. A journey crossing two zones over less than 3 km can qualify for the lowest tier. Gold fares are AED 6, AED 10 and AED 15 respectively. A Red Ticket costs AED 2 to issue, with higher regular single-trip fares of AED 4, AED 6 or AED 8.50. RTA fare table

Transfers can make a Metro-and-bus combination economical. With an eligible nol journey, change modes within 30 minutes of checking out; RTA permits up to three transfers within a maximum 180-minute journey. The combined zones determine the fare. A long restaurant or sightseeing stop starts a new journey rather than extending the first one.

Tap in and out with the same card, including on buses. Keep at least AED 7.50 on a standard card, and more when the intended fare requires it. Online top-ups can remain pending; NFC loading through nol Pay can update a physical card immediately, whereas manually entered card-number top-ups may require activation. RTA top-up guidance

Is a transport pass worth buying?

The seven-day all-zone Silver pass costs AED 110, excluding a new card. Fourteen AED 7.50 journeys cost AED 105, so a simple long-distance return each day does not automatically justify it. More separate journeys can. Passes cover eligible Metro, tram and city-bus travel within the selected zones; intercity and seasonal buses are excluded. Pass prices and coverage rules

Gold Class and the women and children section

Ordinary cabins are the budget choice and can be used by men, women and children. The separate women and children section uses the regular fare and is reserved for those passengers. An adult man travelling with his family should use an ordinary cabin with them. It is not necessary for women to use the reserved section. RTA cabin information

Children under five travel free on Dubai Metro, tram and city buses, according to RTA's current card guidance.

Gold Class offers a separate cabin with wider seats. You need a valid Gold-class fare product, such as a Gold nol card or a Gold Red/QR ticket. A Silver card with plenty of money on it does not grant Gold access.

The premium buys access to that cabin, not a reserved seat. RTA confirms that tapping a Gold card on the Metro or tram incurs the Gold fare even when no Gold seats are available. On a normal bus, which has no Gold cabin, the regular fare applies. Gold is most useful when you value the cabin upgrade on a longer ride; Silver is better for frequent short hops. RTA Gold fare FAQ

Bank cards and phone payment

Buying transport credit with a bank card is different from tapping that bank card directly at a Metro gate. RTA's account-based payment upgrade is scheduled for completion in Q1 2027, with wider bank-card and digital-wallet fare acceptance in its final phase. For now, plan around an accepted nol card or ticket. RTA payment-system update

nol Pay QR tickets already offer a phone-based option for Dubai Metro, tram and bus. They come in Regular and Gold classes. An all-zone Regular one-day QR pass costs AED 22 including the service fee; Gold costs AED 42. The day pass ends at 23:59 on the day of activation, rather than lasting 24 hours. The app needs an internet connection, so this is less convenient without mobile data. RTA QR ticket details

A virtual nol card is another option on compatible Samsung and Huawei devices. Having Apple Pay or a bank card in your phone wallet does not, by itself, make it a nol card. A physical Silver card remains the straightforward choice if you want to avoid device-compatibility questions.

Metro and tram routes and hours

The Red Line serves DXB Terminals 1 and 3 and the Sheikh Zayed Road corridor, including Downtown Dubai and Mall of the Emirates, with connections towards the Marina and Expo City. The Green Line is useful around Deira, Bur Dubai and the Creek. Change between them at Union or BurJuman. The tram connects with the Metro at Sobha Realty and DMCC. RTA network and timetable

Regular Metro station opening hours are:

  • Monday–Thursday and Saturday: 05:00–00:00
  • Friday: 05:00–01:00 the following day
  • Sunday: 08:00–00:00

Tram stations open 06:00–01:00 Monday–Saturday and 09:00–01:00 Sunday. These are station operating windows; the last train for your direction can leave earlier. Sunday’s later start matters for an early airport trip. Holiday schedules can differ.

The tram helps with the final part of a Marina journey, but does not take you along Palm Jumeirah to Atlantis. The separate Palm Monorail has its own fares. Check its current operating information before relying on it; a taxi from the mainland is the simpler alternative for a Palm hotel or a time-specific booking.

Taxis and ride-hailing

Dubai Taxi Company's published ordinary street-hail tariff starts at AED 5 from 06:00–22:00, or AED 5.50 overnight, then AED 2.45 per kilometre. The minimum is AED 12. App-booked taxis have higher starting charges that vary by time, with a published AED 13 minimum.

Waiting is AED 0.50 per minute, and Salik road tolls are additional. DTC also lists an extra AED 20 for trips passing through Sharjah. These are DTC's checked tariffs, rather than a fixed quote for every ride-hailing category. DTC taxi tariffs

For scale, a daytime street-hailed 10 km trip calculates to AED 29.50 before waiting and tolls. Shared by four, that is about AED 7.40 each. This is an illustrative calculation, not a route quote, but shows why a taxi can compete with several public-transport fares.

DTC accepts cash, bank cards and nol, with supported digital-wallet payment. In an app, compare the actual taxi category with private-car or limousine options: the same app can offer different services and pricing.

Driving Salik tolls and parking

A rental car makes more sense for several dispersed stops or journeys beyond Dubai than for a day centred on Metro-accessible attractions. Compare the rental, insurance excess, fuel, parking and tolls with your likely taxi bill. Ask the rental company how it passes on tolls and fines, including any administration charges; the operator's toll is only one part of a rental invoice.

Salik is electronic road tolling. The normal peak periods are 06:00–10:00 and 16:00–20:00, when a chargeable crossing costs AED 6.30 including VAT. Outside those periods it is AED 4.20, with 01:00–06:00 free.

Sundays use the off-peak rate outside the free window, subject to holiday and event exceptions. Ramadan has a separate schedule. The older AED 6/AED 4 figures exclude the 5% VAT introduced on 1 June 2026. Salik tariff bands and VAT announcement

In Waze, use Settings → Navigation → Avoid toll roads, then compare the extra driving time. Waze says a tolled route can still appear when alternatives are unavailable. Saving one toll may not justify a substantial detour. Waze guidance

Public parking is priced by zone. For the first hour, standard roadside Zone A is AED 4.20; premium AP is AED 6.30 at peak times and AED 4.20 off-peak, including VAT. Check the total for your exact zone and duration rather than multiplying one hourly example across every category.

Parking peak hours start at 08:00, two hours later than Salik's morning peak. Many ordinary zones charge Monday–Saturday, 08:00–22:00, but multi-storey and designated 24-hour zones have different rules. Parkin zone prices

Pay through Parkin's app or website, supported payment machines, or SMS to 7275 using the vehicle, zone and duration format. SMS needs a supported UAE mobile subscription and adds AED 0.30 per message. The virtual permit applies to the requested zone. Parkin payment guide

The published base fine for unpaid public parking is AED 150; an expired ticket is AED 100. Other violations and applicable fees can increase the bill. Dubai parking fine schedule

City buses

Buses are particularly useful when a direct service bridges the gap between a Metro station and your destination. They use the nol zone system on ordinary city routes, and eligible Metro-to-bus transfers can avoid paying two separate fares.

Use an accepted nol card or QR ticket; ordinary city buses do not take cash onboard.

There is no single useful “Dubai bus closing time” for every route. Some services run late or overnight; others finish earlier or have long gaps. Use S’hail for the specific stop, direction and travel date. A feeder bus is attractive when it arrives soon; a short taxi hop may be worth the extra cost when it does not. Seasonal attraction buses can have separate fares and operating dates.

DXB and DWC airport transfers

Dubai International Airport, DXB: Terminals 1 and 3 have Red Line stations. Terminal 2 does not have a station at the terminal, so it needs a bus or road connection. Metro is good value if your hotel is near its route and you arrive during operating hours. Dubai Airports Metro information

RTA permits one large suitcase up to 81 × 58 × 30 cm and one small suitcase up to 55 × 38 × 20 cm per passenger. With more luggage or a hotel far from the station, a taxi is usually the easier transfer.

Al Maktoum International Airport, DWC: there is no Metro station at the terminal. Dubai Airports lists F55 to Expo Metro Station and N55 to Ibn Battuta, with onward Metro connections during its operating hours. A bus connection makes DWC viable on a budget, but adds a stage to the journey. DWC bus connections

Airport taxi starting charges are higher than ordinary city pickups. DTC currently lists AED 20 for a normal airport taxi or AED 25 for a van, plus AED 2.62/km, waiting and tolls. Dubai Airports publishes a general AED 25 starting fare, so check the tariff for the vehicle you take rather than assuming one opening charge fits every airport taxi. DTC airport tariff

Abras ferries and water taxis

For Old Dubai, the traditional motorised abra between Bur Dubai and Deira Old Souq, or Dubai Old Souq and Al Sabkha, costs AED 1 per person in cash. It is a practical crossing between the two banks, not an expensive sightseeing cruise. Other abra routes have different fares. RTA marine routes and fares

In Dubai Marina, RTA's listed water-taxi links include Marina Mall North–Marina Walk and Marina Mall South–Bluewaters at AED 7. Ferries suit longer waterfront journeys: the Al Ghubaiba–Sharjah Aquarium service is listed at AED 15 Silver or AED 25 Gold one way. RTA ferry guide

Choose marine transport when the departure fits your day. It is less flexible than the Metro, and payment options vary by station; retain some cash for the traditional crossings. A city transport pass does not cover every boat service.

Abu Dhabi and other intercity trips

For Abu Dhabi, compare a coach, train or road transfer from your actual accommodation. RTA’s E100 leaves Al Ghubaiba and E101 leaves Ibn Battuta for Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station. RTA intercity options

Etihad Rail’s checked direct trains take 64 minutes station to station. Dubai Station is at Jumeirah Golf Estates with a Metro bridge; Abu Dhabi Station is in Mohamed Bin Zayed City. Add local transfers and choose the return before booking sightseeing. Etihad Rail departures

For Sharjah, Ajman, Al Ain and Fujairah, use the destination-specific services in RTA’s planner. Check the exact route and fare: ordinary Dubai city-bus passes do not cover intercity travel.

Airports and the two major arenas

Coca-Cola Arena is in Dubai's City Walk, with DXB the relevant nearby airport. Visit Dubai describes the drive as about 15 minutes, a useful location indicator rather than a dependable transfer duration. The Red Line to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall followed by a walk or taxi is the public-transport alternative. Venue location

Etihad Arena is on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, so Zayed International Airport, AUH, is the logical airport pairing. A taxi or road transfer links the airport and Yas Bay directly. The arena is separate from Etihad Rail's Mohamed Bin Zayed City station; arriving by train still leaves an onward journey. Etihad Arena visitor information

What is coming next

Air taxis and the airport hub: Dubai's VDX vertiport near DXB received regulatory certification in July 2026. It is the first hub in the planned Joby/Skyports network, with other locations announced for Dubai Mall, Atlantis The Royal and the American University of Dubai area. Infrastructure approval and demonstration flights are milestones towards passenger service; at this guide's check date, we had not verified an ordinary public booking service or fares. Official certification announcement

Dubai Loop: Elon Musk's The Boring Company has a contract for a 6.4 km, four-station pilot between DIFC and Dubai Mall. Its project page lists the scheme as under contract, with design, permits and mobilisation preceding tunnelling. It is a vehicle-tunnel project, separate from the high-speed, low-pressure-tube Hyperloop concept. Dubai Loop project

Hyperloop: there is no verified bookable Dubai–Abu Dhabi Hyperloop service to include in a visitor itinerary. For travel now, compare the operating train, coach and road options above; future-project headlines should not determine your airport transfer or day-trip plan.
